Speech-Language Pathology Assistants

All Speech-Language Pathologists must register any individual looking to provide direct patient services in the state of NC as outlined in Administrative Code 21 NCAC 64 .1004 Authorized Tasks of Speech-Language Pathology Assistants(a).

If a Speech-Language Pathologist supervises or provides supervision for an unregistered individual they are in violation of Article 22 § 90-301A Unethical acts and practices (2) and (8).

If there is an individual looking to provide direct patient services in the state of NC as outlined in Administrative Code 21 NCAC 64 .1004 Authorized Tasks of Speech-Language Pathology Assistants(a) and they have not been registered with the Board before they must fill out the application form below, and supply official (not student copy) transcripts. To apply, scroll to the bulleted list below and click, “Apply Online”. You may also view the application by clicking, “Assistants” from the gray bar above, and from the dropdown menu click, “SLP-Assistant Application”.

In addition to the current pathways to be registered as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant the Board will now offer a temporary registration option for those completing 100 hours of supervised Clinical Fieldwork for applicants meeting degree and coursework requirements.

The Board will start accepting ASHA Assistant Certification Exam in lieu of the North Carolina SLP-Assistant administered exam. For more information please review the ASHA Assistant Certification page.

Assistant Applicants still submit official transcripts as part of their application. Assistants are still required to be registered under a NC licensed supervisor to work in NC.
