Speech-Language Pathology Assistants

For applicants who hold a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Science Disorders, you are required to obtain 100 hours of clinical fieldwork in SLP-Assisting. You must first obtain a temporary SLP-Assistant registration under a supervisor who has been approved by the Board in order to complete the 100 hours of clinical fieldwork in SLP-Assisting. To be eligible to supervise a Temporary SLP-Assistant, the licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) must have held a full, unrestricted SLP license for at least two years and must have supervised an SLP-Assistant with a full registration for at least one year.

To obtain Clinical Fieldwork in North Carolina, you must either be enrolled in a college or university program or hold a temporary registration with the Board. You must be currently enrolled and have prior approval from your school or have a temporary registration before you begin accruing clinical fieldwork hours.

Additionally, all Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) must register any individual providing direct patient services in NC as outlined in Administrative Code 21 NCAC 64 .1004 – Authorized Tasks of Speech-Language Pathology Assistants. Supervising or allowing unregistered individuals to provide direct patient services is a violation of Article 22 § 90-301A Unethical acts and practices (2) and (8).

To supervise or provide supervision for a temporary Speech-Language Pathology Assistant the SLP must:

  • Hold a full license for at least 2 years.
  • Have at least one year supervising an SLP-Assistant.

  • SLP-Assistant’s must be registered under the supervision of a NC licensed SLP to work in the state.

To remove an assistant from your license, send an email to Elisabeth Newman. Include the following details in your email:

  • Your full name and license number.
  • The assistant’s name and registration number.
  • The end date of supervision.

The Primary Supervising SLP shall remit to the Board an annual registration fee for the Assistant in the amount of forty dollars. Online payments are subject to a convenience charge.

If the Primary Supervising SLP will no longer supervise an SLP-Assistant, they must remove the assistant from their license. To do so, send an email to Elisabeth Newman with the following information:

  • Your full name and license number.
  • The assistant’s name and registration number.
  • The end date of supervision.
