Temporary Speech-Language Pathology Licensure

The most common reason for delay in the consideration of an application is error in completing the application accurately, providing the required information, and not following the instructions. Temporary licensees may provide services through telepractice.

These are located on page four of Article 22 in section § 90-298. Qualifications of applicants for temporary licensure.

The North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists (NCBOESLPA) will no longer enforce 90-295 (a)(3) of Article 22. Licensure Act for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists requiring clinical hours to be broken into specified diagnostic areas. Moving forward, applicants for a temporary speech and language pathology license must submit evidence of completing at minimum 400 hours of supervised clinical experience. These hours require a minimum of 25 hours of guided observation and 375 hours of direct patient contact.

Applications and applicable fees must be submitted one week prior to the monthly board meeting to be reviewed at that months board meeting.

On May 14, 2021, the Board voted to make it the Board’s policy to accept telesupervision of temporary licensees as direct supervision, when the supervising licensee has determined that the circumstances are appropriate.

“Accredited college or university” means an institution of higher learning accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities, or accredited by a similarly recognized association of another locale. (1975, c.733, s. 1; 1987, c. 665, s.1.).

The completion date is the day all observation hours are supposed to be completed by. Your expiration date is twenty days after the completion date to allow time for your paperwork to be processed by the Board office.

If there are any changes in your SEY Plan you are to provide the Board with a new plan in advance of those changes. Any change in your plan must be approved in advance by the Board, in order to keep your temporary license valid.
