Important Reminder: Direct Supervision Requirements for Temporary Licensees

October 9, 2026

The Board would like to remind temporary licensees and their supervisors that direct supervision is required for the entire period an individual practices under a Temporary License, in accordance with the approved SEY Plan.

Meeting the requirements for a Permanent License does not end the direct supervision requirement. Temporary Licensees must continue to receive direct supervision under their approved SEY Plan until their Permanent License has been issued by the Board. The individual may not practice without the required direct supervision simply because they have completed the requirements for permanent licensure.

Responsibilities of Temporary Licensees

  • Continue to receive direct supervision in accordance with the approved SEY Plan until the Permanent License has been issued.
  • Submit the SEY Report as soon as all requirements for a Permanent License have been met.
  • Communicate to your Supervisor when the SEY Report has been submitted for their approval, as the system does not send an automatic notification to the Supervisor.
  • Upon notification from the Board that the SEY Report has been approved, submit the Permanent License fee promptly.
  • Continue to comply with all temporary licensure requirements until the Permanent License is issued.

Responsibilities of Supervisors

  • Ensure that Temporary Licensees continue to receive direct supervision in accordance with their approved SEY Plan for the duration of their Temporary License.
  • Do not discontinue direct supervision based solely on the Temporary Licensee’s completion of the requirements for permanent licensure.
  • Communicate with the Temporary Licensee regarding the timing of the SEY Report submission, as the system does not automatically notify the Supervisor.
  • Continue to ensure compliance with supervision requirements until the Board has issued the Permanent License.

Please note: ASHA credentials are not required for Permanent Licensure in North Carolina.

We appreciate your attention to these requirements and your commitment to ensuring compliance with North Carolina licensure regulations. Maintaining appropriate supervision throughout the temporary licensure period is essential to protecting the public and ensuring compliance with Board requirements.
